Software Diagnostics, Observability, and Debugging Crosswords

Software diagnostics has its own vocabulary. We use it to describe execution artifacts, recognize diagnostic patterns, and communicate our findings. Crosswords provide another way to revisit this vocabulary, recall familiar concepts, and discover gaps in our knowledge.

In this book, we bring together twenty-four crosswords covering software diagnostics, observability, and debugging. Separate puzzles explore Windows, Linux, and macOS memory dump vocabulary, followed by memory dump analysis patterns whose names are independent of operating systems and debugger commands. Other crosswords cover trace and log analysis, distributed tracing, and trace analysis patterns.

WinDbg, GDB, and LLDB have separate command puzzles for memory dump analysis and live debugging. Live debugging concepts include established terminology and unified debugging patterns from my Debugging 4D courses. Additional puzzles cover x86, x64, and ARM64 instructions and registers commonly encountered in crash dumps, together with observability foundations, metrics, reliability, and telemetry pipelines.

This collection is intended for software developers, support engineers, testers, and anyone interested in expanding their diagnostic vocabulary. It can accompany practical training, support individual study, or provide a diagnostic diversion between debugging sessions. Each part includes reference notes, and all answer keys are collected at the end.
